CompareKangling is literally translated as “leg” (kang) “flute” (ling). It is the Tibetan name for a ritual trumpet made out of a human femur (thighbone). It is commonly used in Tibetan Buddhism for the practice of Chöd rituals and funerary practices. They can be very simple to highly ornate in appearance. Sometimes they are ornamented with metal such as copper or silver and they can be mounted with gemstones such as coral and turquoise. It is also possible to use Kanglings crafted from wood and in more recent times they are being made from resin to overcome any travel restrictions.
“Madal” is a Nepali folk musical instrument played in most of Nepali folk music. Made up of wooden log, hollow inside, it produces a good Nepali folk drum sound which is played by hand.
INTRODUCTION TO THANKA
A thangka, variously spelt as thangka, tangka, thanka, or tanka (Nepali pronunciation: [ˈथान्का]; Tibetan: ཐང་ཀ་; Nepal Bhasa: पौभा), is a Tibetan Buddhist painting on cotton, silk appliqué, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. Thangkas are traditionally kept unframed and rolled up when not on display, mounted on a textile backing somewhat in the style of Chinese scroll paintings, with a further silk cover on the front. So treated, thangkas can last a long time, but because of their delicate nature, they have to be kept in dry places where moisture will not affect the quality of the silk.
